North to Vermont

We decide to take a road trip without the RV. My calculations are that for a short trip, the motel rooms and restaurants will be cheaper than gas for the behemoth.

Bruce and Felica take us to dinner in a German restaurant in Atlanta. I have something called sweinbraten...very good...

Aloysius is a fairly large dog. he likes to climb up in your lap and lick your face.

We talk Bruce and Felica into seeing the Carter library and Carter Center in Atlanta.

Jimmy has been active in fighting poverty, disease and brokering peace agreements during his retirement. I drove 100 miles to vote for him in 1974.

After Atlanta we spend some time on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive.

The leaves have started to turn at the higher elevations.

The green house at 333 Center Street  in Ithaca is where I was living during WWII while my father and all my uncles were out of town.

This bar has been here since 1946. I always have wanted to go in. Mrs. Phred has a glass of wine and I have a rum and coke. Albert Einstein might have had a drink here. He used to come down from Cornell and get my father to cook eggs and ham early in the morning at the diner which is now gone.

My father bought this gray house at 105 Utica Street about 1948. We lived here for five years before moving to Florida. We packed all our stuff in a small trailer behind a 1949 Chevy and went to Tampa.

We hiked from Lower Enfield  to Upper Enfield one day. It's about a five mile round trip.

There are many deep, narrow gorges arounf Ithaca. They've been carved in the last 10,000 years though soft shale formations after the glaciers receded.

We do some wine tasting at a few of the many wineries around the Finger Lakes.

Watkins Glen at the base of Senaca Lake is one of the most spectacular gorges in the area.

We start at the top and walk down and back up.

I count the steps on the way back up. There are over 700. The next day we both feel muscle pain in our legs.

After Ithaca we head up to Vermont....more about that later.

On the Verge

I'm trying again to get my weight down. When I hit 178 I'll be 62 pounds lighter. My reward will be a new motorcycle. Only 9.2 pounds to go......Meanwhile, elsewhere, a Florida massage therapist revealed that she had had surgery to implant a third breast. “I got it because I wanted to make myself unattractive to men,” she said. “If this doesn’t work, I’m through".

I sat on the new Honda CBR 300 with the automatic braking system today during my walk. I didn't like the way it felt. The Honda 700 felt more like a real motorcycle and less like a kid's crotch rocket. The gas tank is below the seat so the center of gravity is low. They say that two cylinders are better than one.....A judge in Kansas ruled that a man with a neck tattoo reading MURDER could wear a turtleneck during his trial for first-degree murder.

We've been to some fantastic places this year...All over Alaska, canoeing on the Yukon, Wendover Nevada, Sho-Low Arizona, A cruise over the Atlantic where I got to wear my new tuxedo, Barcelona, Florence, Cinque Terra, Venice, Pisa, Verona, Vienna, \Budapest...and more..U.S. Veterans Health Administration offered Vietnam veteran Doug Chase an appointment with a primary-care doctor  22 months after he died of a brain tumor. “We are committed to providing primary care in a timely manner,” said a letter sent to Chase, “and would greatly appreciate a prompt response".

I still need to sort though about 10,000 pictures to make the Firecloud 2015 Calendar...Let me know if you want one...A September raid on an ISIS safe house in Syria turned up a Dell laptop containing recipes for bubonic plague and ricin, and a recipe for banana mousse and a variety of songs by Celine Dion.

In two days my radiation treatments will be over. We will leave the RV in Sarasota and head North to see the leaves change in New England...on the way we want to see the Jimmy Carter Presidential library in Atlanta...one of my bucket list items is to see them all. A traditional dish on the Italian island of Sardinia is casu marzu. It's made using sheep's milk cheese that has been injected with live insect larvae. The cheese is generally cut into thin strips and spread on flat bread. You have to hold your hand over the bread while eating it, as the white, inch-long larvae can leap up about six inches.

Punta Gorda

We decide to spend the weekend in the Wyvern Hotel in downtown Punta Gorda. The town has the highest proportion of over 65 people in Florida (44%).

Next door to the hotel is the "South of the Border". They have great rock that lasts until 11PM. The old folks come to dance and eat. At 11 the bands change to heavy metal and the old folks leave and youngsters show up.

The view from the top of the hotel.

They have a band on the roof...it keeps us awake until midnight....we don't care... we came to listen and dance...

 Sunset in Florida...

The bikers have the typical silver ponytails and tattoos...they clear out at 11 when the heavy metal shows up...

In the morning we explore Punta Gorda...everyone lives on a canal and has a boat...

Next time we'll go the Fisherman's Village on Saturday night and listen to that band..

Ginnie Springs

North Florida- September

'We wake up early on Saturday and take the old camper van 200 miles North to Ginnie Springs.

We have a lot of happy memories of camping and swimming and partying this place over the years. The Santa Fe river is edged with beautiful clear springs that pump out 20-30 million gallons a day of clear water...visibility hundreds of feet..

It's full of college kids...they hoot and holler and play loud music until 3 AM and later...We find an isolated camping spot and watch the skies as darkness falls...Mars and Saturn are up...the skies cloud over and we amuse ourselves with a smart phone app that shows us the invisible stars.

All the college  kids have tubes and floats...Mrs. Phred and I are the only one actually swimming in the river to the get out point...it's a little cold...but we love it...

I forgot my C-card so I don't dive the caves or caverns...I do have all my SCUBA gear...but I really came up to just float...in the caves, they don't like you to have flashlights unless you are cave certified...I'm a Dive master, but I've never cared for the underwater cave concept...three lights...a safety line to follow in and out...go in with 3,000 PSI...start out at 2,000 PSI..yada..yada..what's the point? You came out and you didn't die? Duh!

The water is really high because of all the summer rain...many of the campsites are underwater.

I cook salmon and warm up cans of spinach and  beans on the charcoal grill...we sleep in the van..

The Santa Fe disappears underground for three miles...this area is relatively unspoiled It's Old Florida at it's best. If you read Trip Advisor you get some really bad reviews by people who show up on the weekend and get pounded by obscene music all night long by drunken college kids...the trick is to pick a remote campground away from the river and watch the stars and wild turkeys.

All My Hats Look Goofy

Englewood Beach

When I walk seven miles down busy  Fruitville road in the 95 degree heat, I like to wear a hat. But I'd like to find a hat that didn't look quite as  goofy as the ones that I own now...

There are some interesting birds here...Mrs. Phred wants to go to the  Wyvern Hotel in Northport and spend the night...what a wild woman!

We went to Ybor city for crepes and classic coke last week...There is a SCUBA place near here called Blue Water Explorers...they claim to do a two tank dive daily...maybe I will show up at their boat about 7AM and test that claim...

We got an invite to crew on a sailboat trip from Saint Lucie to Sarasota. The cruise is across Florida on a canal. That will be November 1. Later in November we are taking a cruise to Roatan, Belize, Coasta Maya  and Cozumel...All of these are great places to SCUBA...

We found a really cool pub on the water down in Englewood...it's called the White Elephant.. We'd like to spend a weekend here...it's a nice beach...We also want to take the boat from Fort Myers to Key West and rent a sailboat (docked) for a weekend.

Mrs. Phred likes raw  oysters...I stick to dark rum and coke...
