Naples & Pompeii

In the morning we wander around Naples.


We pay for admission to a castle/fortress near the cruise ship.



In the afternoon we take a tour om Pompeii, which was covered in volcanic ash to a depth of 30 feet in 79 A.D.



Some relics fro areas that have been excavated.


About 1,200 slaves were commanded to stay and guard the possessions of their masters. They all had slave belts with the names of their owners. Their bodies dissolved away and left cavities in the ash. Some of these were filled with plaster such as the one below.


It's a big city....a seaport...although the eruption pushed the sea back 5 kilometers (3 miles).


This is a fast food stand...one house they uncovered had 50,000 square feet...
